Let's learn Something about Virus [Computer Virus not a Living Virus]

Computers and data have become the life line of any organisation or of any personal one.
If something goes wrong with computers or the data, business almost comes to a standstill.
This causes a loss of several hours of hard work and research to get lost data back.

So What is a Virus?

In simple words a computer virus is a program or a complete set/collection of programs that disrupts the normal functioning of a computer. Some times these virus may also infects or may destroy the data also.It also don't need any permission or knowledge of the user to enter in the computer.

Virus stands for Vital Input/Information Resources Under Seize. They are self-replicating and are continuously expanding their reach by infecting more and more computer files, resulting in loss of speed and destruction of data of computer system.

Introducing you to some types of Viruses:

Program File Virus: These virus infects executable files, program such as those with extension like .com, .exe, .olv, .drv, .sys etc. These programs get loaded in the memory during execution. The virus becomes active in memory by replicating itself and infecting files on the disk. Sunday, Cascade, etc are example of program file virus.

Trojan Horse: Trojan Horse are simplest programs that pretend to be useful applications while they always do something destructive. They are not self replicating. A Trojan can spread only when it is copied to another system. The name ‘Trojan Horse’ came from the wooden horse used by the Greek Army to conquer the city of troy.

Worm: A worm is a program that makes and facilitates the distribution of copies of itself; for example, from one disk drive to another, or by copying itself using email or another transport mechanism. The worm may do damage and compromise the security of the computer. It may arrive via exploitation of a system vulnerability or by clicking on an infected e-mail.

Bootsect Virus: These Virus infect the boot record or master boot records. They replace the boot record that is responsible for loading the operation system in memory by copying it elsewhere. Boot virus become active at a time of booting the machine. Example are- Disk killer, Stone Virus etc.

Macro Virus: Macro viruses are viruses that use another application's macro programming language to distribute themselves. They infect documents such as MS Word or MS Excel and are typically spread to other similar documents.

Memory Resident Viruses: Memory Resident Viruses reside in a computers volatile memory (RAM). They are initiated from a virus which runs on the computer and they stay in memory after it's initiating program closes.

Rootkit Virus: A Rootkit virus is an undetectable virus which attempts to allow someone to gain control of a computer system. The term Rootkit comes from the Linux administrator root user. These viruses are usually installed by Trojans and are normally disguised as operating system files.

Polymorphic Viruses: A polymorphic virus not only replicates itself by creating multiple files of itself, but it also changes it's digital signature every time it replicates. This makes it difficult for less sophisticated antivirus software to detect.

Malware: Malware is made up of two words malicious and software . It is a software that enters into a computer and damages it without the knowledge of the users. Malware is a trouble causing program. It may be a virus, worm, Trojan Horse or Spyware. Malware not only interrupt the normal working of a computer but also steal important information.

Spyware: Spyware is a type of malware that is installed on computers and collects information about users without their Knowledge. Spyware programs secretly monitor the user’s computing. They can collect various types of personal information such as internet surfing habits, visited web pages, and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Sometimes they also change computing setting that results in slow connection speed and wrong functionality of other programs. Spyware can also collect information about e-mail addresses, passwords and even credit card numbers.

Logic Bombs/Time Bombs Virus: These are viruses which are programmed to initiate at a specific date or when a specific event occurs. Some examples are a virus which deletes your photos on Halloween, or a virus which deletes a database table if a certain employee gets fired.

Here are some facts about Virus:

>>>The first PC virus was a boot sector virus named as Brain, released in 1987 by the Farooq Alvi Brothers in Lahore,Pakistan.

>>>The Creeper Virus was first detected on ARPANET in the early 1970s.

>>>Some Popular viruses are Jerusalem or Israeli Virus, Brain or Pakistani Brain, April First, Ping Pong or Bouncing Ball, Stoned(Marijauna), Dark Avenger.
